September Challenge!

Bottom of the third quarter and we are all tied up at 4. Not the score I wanted but I look back so far and smile at what I've tried. I'm reminded of the famous quote from Alfred Lord Tennyson's poem In Memoriam.  One of the MANY reasons why this all started was to learn a thing or two. After visiting the Ranch and learning several foreign skills that are commonplace for a manual laborer, I desired to learn more skills that would help me now, in the long run, improve the quality of my life, be fun to know or just be something a guy should know.

Many have suggested it, and I agree...

This month's challenge is a skills challenge.

I will seek to learn several skills this month. Many of those skills will be determined throughout the next 30 days, but include learning how to:

Sew on a button
Change a diaper & wrap a baby in a blanket
Determine north without the use of a compass from anywhere.
Change spark plugs
General household handyman maintenance.

As usual, I recommend you challenge yourself. Are there any tasks you have always wanted to learn? Anything you should learn to improve the quality of your life? Anything that would at the very least be interesting to experience?

Turn off the video games, close off your Netflix, put down your sandwich and tell her you will call back later. Its time to learn some skillz.

  1. Man, where to start with this one!
    For you;
    Using a multimeter (you might have to go and buy one ($10)).
    Soldering (think electronics, but plumbing is a good start).
    Cooking.
    Linux.
    Photoshop (will accept Gimp).
    Video editing.
    Install a ceiling fan.
    Install an insinkerator.
    Back up your data on your computer.
    Reinstall windows (or what ever it is you run).
    Create a web site. (with domain name hosting and analytics).
    How to taste wine.
    Learn morse code.

    For the two of us;
    Learn to play piano (or drums).
    Learn a second language.
    Learn PHP or Java.

    That should take care of this month.
    (and yes, I am serious about all my suggestions).

  2. Using a multimeter – Multiwhat? Yes, I agree.
    Soldering (think electronics, but plumbing is a good start). – YES! Very good.

    Cooking. – I think a whole month could be dedicated to this. More so than the others, no?

    Linux. – Like how to install it?

    Photoshop (will accept Gimp). – Yes, this would even help out with my career.

    Video editing. – Done it. Not a pro, but I made a decent video game trailer/demo for my last company.

    Install a ceiling fan. Yes.
    Install an insinkerator. Arrrnold.

    Back up your data on your computer. – “how doeth one back up, that, one doeth not have.”

    Reinstall windows (or what ever it is you run). – I should actually be getting a comp soon, so this will be a useful skill to learn.

    Create a web site. (with domain name hosting and analytics). – I’ve actually built a basic html website, created a cheesy “geocities” page, ran a message board (everyone hated it though) and tried my hand at a blog w/analytics

    How to taste wine. Interesting. We should talk about this one in two weeks when I see you next.

    Learn Morse code. – YES! Can you teach me?

    For the two of us;
    Learn to play piano (or drums). – Played Piano for a few years, rocked percussion for 5 years
    Learn a second language. – Parle-eh view Fronsay?
    Learn PHP or Java – Agreed.

    I will look at what I have planned already, your suggestions and the other suggestions that have come in and figure out what I'm going to do. Thanks, these were great.
